“The three Bondurant brothers run a bootlegging operation during the depression, up in the mountains of Franklin County, Virginia. Crooked Special Deputy Charles Rakes is after a share of the brothers’ profits. Compounding their troubles, the local competition is elbowing in on their activities. Forrest’s boisterous defiance and Cricket’s knack for moonshine production help the brothers gain a local monopoly. When Forrest is wounded as tension with Rakes escalates, Jack, initially the timid one, must prove his worth against gangster Floyd Banner’s mob, and we see him metamorphose into a cocky exhibitionist in his attempts to woo the off-limits preacher’s daughter, Bertha.”- imdb.com

run time.

Shia Friggen Labeouf. This dude has MASSIVE talents. Transformers aside (for those of you who hate those movies, I don’t), he’s been great in every other thing he’s acted in & I mean from Even Stevens right up to this movie. I don’t know what inspiration he took to portray his character, but he does a good job, the director too. Mr. Oldman wasn’t in it for much of the movie, he had more of a cameo role. Lastly, if you read my tdkr review, you’ll know that I hated Bane for more than one reason. Tom Hardy I believe to be a decent actor, but now, He may be a great actor. The size he had for Bane, he may have kept on for this role and it’s good that he did. He barely speaks but when he does, it’s so damn effective. You end up loving his character by the end of the film. For the sake of not spoiling anything, I’ll end there.

The movie is about bootlegging (alcohol, for those who didn’t know, was banned in the late 20’s- early 30’s, so many started making their own anyway possible), but not only that, it’s about family/brotherhood. There are not physical parents to note, but Tom Hardy is easily the father head, but still very much the older brother (Though, he could have also been the middle child). It had a great blend of subtle humor, action, family dynamic, and character development. I honestly just love this movie.

There’s both soundtrack and original score for this film, and when the vocal songs are used, it’s like using the music to really say what the character on screen is feeling and saying. As much as that seems the norm, it’s really not.

There’s a lot of blood in this movie, but not to an excessive amount. That’s really the only effect used. There’s one scene though, that may make you feel a way.

Honestly, this is just a flawless movie. It’s not perfect in any means, but for what the story is, it’s incredible. I didn’t think these actors would 1) ever do a film together, or 2) be so well fit to act together. You believe every scene that the 3 brothers have together. Oscar season is now, and this movie deserves a consideration in one of the top awards, none of that best editing garbage.

For a second opinion see @Mr_STiXX‘s review on the film.

  • Overall rating of the movie: 5 out of 5,
  • Cinematography: 4 out of 5,
  • Editing: 5 out of 5,
  • Audio: 4.9 out of 5,
  • Acting: 5 out of 5,
  • Theatres or wait for the blu-ray? Worth the full price of admission. Depending on the features, blu-ray for sure.

THAT’S IT! Cheers: “To Peace” and May the Force be with you!
