AvX #1

Even though the summer is done, this is your Summer comic event. As I write this I just finished issue 10 and yes.. You’ll see that soon.

So this Marvel Comics event starts out with Avx #0 (which you can read the review for that issue by clicking the AvX or simply the word *HERE*… HERE) then this issue Starts off kind of almost how that issue left off, The Phoenix Force is coming. The last time it was seen it took the life of Jean Grey (see the X-men animated show.. Its on Netflix and I’m sure some TV stream site has it). As the Force comes for its intended host, Artist John Romita Jr. (Kick-ass co-creator) shows us just how much of a life and death force it is, as it clean sweeps an alien race’s home planet. Cut to Avengers tower aka, Stark Tower, where its just like any other day, and then suddenly, some streaking light appears, it crashes into a commercial airplane and all hell seems to have broken loose.. But I say again.. Its like any other day as each member of the roster at hand, springs to action,[[??]] is as soon as the actions over.. Finding the fallen object we discover its Nova (first epic moment) he then whispers, ‘it’s coming’. Captain America (here on out known as Cap.A) instructs Thor and Iron Man to follow Nova’s path prior to crash landing, only to learn what Nova meant, the Phoenix is coming. Later, at the White House, Iron Man and Cap tell Obama what the hell happened in New York City, and what to expect, all while Hope Summers is being trained on Utopia, to harness the power of the Phoenix, for she is the intended vessel. When Cyclops pushes her too far, a Phoenix like power shrouds her.. Alerting Iron man. Cap.A races off to the Jean Grey School for gifted youngsters. Where he consults the headmaster… Wolverine (here on out/aka: Logan) who tells Cap, he founded this school so kids with mutant powers, can actually learn & not fight. On Utopia, Cap confronts Cyclops informing him he wants to take the girl for safe keeping. Cyclops says no…. Cap.A tells him.. “I wasn’t asking” Cyclops says.. With an optic blast…. He knew that. (Epic moment 3)… Thus starting Avengers. versus. X-Men.

John. Romita. Jr. is by far one of Marvel’s BEST! Artist… Ever, and this issue is no different. He has a way of being able to draw epic things and then very subtle things. On a first issue you kind of have to go big so that one doesn’t go home, so to speak. There’s like 3 epic moments in this issue and its a great union that the writer, the artists and the letterer have to deliver them. For as long as this artist is around, I’ll make mine marvel.

Bendis is like the most employed writer at marvel. He’s writing the new avengers, ultimate spider-man, and he’ll guess write all while doing this. I’m sure his run on the New avengers influence the movie a bit. His and Millar’s Ultimates run. Bendis is SUPERB when it comes to dialogue, and crowd reactions. Cause the New York he depicts, is alive. It’s not just heroes running around New York all the time. There’s a moment where when nova is crashing he hits a building, someone says “that’s it, I’m done” its small stuff like that, that just makes this book and his writing excel. I’m sure the entire group of writers who we’ll see in later books, had a bit of an influence. In particular who ever is writing the X-men books. Honestly. For something that has been YEARS in the making, the writing doesn’t feel cheap, it doesn’t feel dated, it feels as if a nice pay off. Bendis has been the master mind for countless arcs, and this leading into the recently announced “Marvel Now” seems like this is his “send off”… For lack of a better term. (Don’t worry he’s not leaving Marvel).

For what this book is, it’s a great page turner, and just a nice story to pit two teams against each other. The only quibble I may have, in the over all… this is more for the people who have been following the arcs/titles the preceded this crossover( as seen in my last review).
