AVX #5

AvX continues. Not on Utopia, but this time on the Moon.

This is by far my favourite cover for the series. PERIOD.

As the two teams head to battle, Hope Summers is off to the side trying to see if she’s able to handle the entire Force of the Phoenix. The two teams engage in battle, while Logan tries to end the connection between Hope and the Phoenix, by killing Hope Summers. Meanwhile, Stark who is off preparing his “end game” weapon (If you will), a “Phoenix Buster” suit. As the battle rages on, Logan finally reaches Hope to kill her… *OPTIC BLAST*. All around Earth and slightly beyond, different characters are feeling the immense power of the Phoenix. Back on the moon, the Phoenix Buster is ready. Stark launches it towards the fire bird, he initiates the “Big Bang Cannon” (Stark & Pym believe the Phoenix Force was the “result” of the big bang.. Which may be the single most powerful “bang” in history) and just like the atom bomb, there’s a shock wave… Silence.. and questions. For as Cap.A looks around, they notice something that was far from expected. Cyclops, Namor, Magik, Emma Frost, and Colossus have absorbed the Phoenix. To be continued.

Well this issue was similar to the way issue two played out with the narrative, but instead of every hero, it was solely coming from Hope Summers. It really does ask great questions about life. Kinda like what came first, the chicken or the egg? Or, what is responsible for a gun shot victim? The bullet, the gun, or the hand? It really takes a deep look at what is happening. Fraction has been a writer I’ve been following for awhile now, since he took over the Invincible Iron man book to “reboot” it, to make it closer to the Robert Downey Jr version of the character (Which has been a major joy to read).
I believe he did a brief stint as an X-men writer (he “created” the Utopia the X-men have at the time of this issue). He tends to write stuff that makes you think, all while being able to give you great super hero moments.

JR. Jr draws such brutal scenes of violence. It’s probably why he decided to join Mark Millar in creating Kick-ass (which is now a major motion picture being filmed in Toronto… Again). When Hope goes a little berserk, Logan gets MESSED up and it’s so helpful to have an artist that can draw so well. All the previous work, I haven’t mentioned any of the great work that the inker has done. But he, Scott Hanna, has been phenomenal. The last 3 issues have just been so well done by showing how huge this event is, and how much of an impact each action has for each character. If anyone knows John Romita Jr and is reading this, tell him/her Xavier says thank you (Unless of course you are John Romita Jr.).

Again, this was a “fight” issue, but this was way more of an emotional issue as well. Hope, she is like 15 years old, and having all this chaos around her; wanting the phoenix force, having others wanting to kill her, protect/detain her. Not to mention that she is the “mutant messiah” so her “pain” and her “chicken or the egg” comparison is pretty on point, all things considered. This is the turning point issue. It’s no longer “AvX”, But Avengers Versus the Phoenix Five.
