Government conspiracy theories are always around us. But what if you died to prevent one of the greatest evils the world has ever known? Only if to see it still thrive? Insert a 90-somthing year old super soldier. What if you were a soldier who fell in battle only to be caught by the enemy. Insert the winter soldier.

The creative team behind this movie did that and made it a great ride for 2 plus hours. The comic arc isn’t something I’m too familiar with,  but I knew a good amount going in. And thats really from reading all the marvel comics cross over books (like Secret invasion, Avengers etc). So for those who are worried, trust that the movie doesn’t require you to know anything else aside from maybe the Avengers movie and maybe Iron Man 2. Really didn’t need to see the first Captain America movie. As I say. Marvel has a great way accepting new readers at any point in a story/arc.

The best part about this movie is its odd sense of feeling grounded. The stunts, story, and dialogue are tremendously blended to give the viewers a modern day government espionage film. The stunts aren’t as over top as Avengers were or even the first Avenger film. Not everything explodes from the simplest thing. There isn’t a stunt that had some sorta crazy effects. Really reminded me of the 90’s actions movies.

The dialogue is decent and showed a new layer to Steve Rogers. He’s more modernized. Speaks a bit more like today’s RESPECTFUL adult. Only person I thought had bad lines was the first appearance of Black Widow in the movie. Personally, who I wished had more, was GSP’s Batroc character. I heavily enjoyed Nick Fury’s presence on screen. Marvel/Disney needs to let the man swear tho.

The one character I didn’t feel was done right was Falcon. He could have been more of an asset, but was more utilized as a background player. He’s used well, just could have done more as a character. Past that I felt that Bucky Barnes, in the form of Winter Soldier was more a starting point character. He didn’t seem to have his story fully explained.

Bottom line: In terms of Phase 2″  properties go for Marvel,  this is a significant step forward and a great starting point for Avengers two. I’m as excited as I can be with what that easter egg of Dr. Strange and the post credit scene.

Uncanny Avengers #1 Review

So if you remember this year’s event AVX, and even the epilogue of the AVX: consequences (maybe if you’re lucky you can still get the issues, I posted them in my review of book 12 at the bottom), then you may have seen this coming. From Marvel anyway.
Uncanny Avengers-Zone-000
“…. We failed him. Chuck’s died without ever seeing his dream come true”- Logan aka Wolverine.

Now, take that in. It’s true isn’t it? In all the years I’ve known about the X-Men, only in alternate universes have the X-Men even come remotely close to achieving the professor’s dream. So with that in mind, the creative team of Rick Remender, and John Cassidy (on art minus colour) bring us Uncanny Avengers, which consists of Wolverine, Captain America, Havok (see X-Men: First Class), Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlett Witch, Rogue, and Thor.

The book deals with the core X-Men principle: “Why are we hated? Because we’re different”, which I think everyone at some point in time in their lives will experience some form of hatred. Be it from an obvious/fair reason (I. E, YEARS of bullying), or even to things out of ones control, such a being of a certain creed and race (in case you didn’t know, the X-Men is a super powered version of the civil rights moment of the 60’s), but I’m drifting…

I love this book. If I didn’t say it in my Spider-man review, then I meant to say that I’ve never had a “favourite all time individual comic”. I have favourite arcs/runs etc, but nothing for an individual issue. This may have topped any single issue I’ve ever read, which is largely due to the creative team. The Red Skull (last famously seen in the Captain America movie, and last years event, Fear Itself) just by appearance is scary, and the way in which John Cassidy drew him. Then there’s the extent of his villainy.. *SPOILER * HE TAKES OUT THE BRAIN OF PROFESSOR XAVIER. Let that sit for a second, a pro Nazi general has taken the brain of the worlds STRONGEST TELEPATH.
