Iron Man 3: Movie Review

wpid-twimg_media_A50vEZcCAAA-Efr.jpg_710.jpgShall we begin?  Shall we begin the summer Blockbuster season? Upped from $140 million, to $200 million to the budget to get the best possible Iron Man movie, post Avengers.

Director: Shane Black, Writer: Drew Pearce & Shane Black (Screenplay) Running time: 130 minutes
  • Robert Downey Jr. – Tony Stark
  • Gwyneth Paltrow – Pepper Potts
  • Jon Favreau – Happy Hogan
  • Ben Kingsley – The Mandarin
  • Don Cheadle – James Rhodes
  • Guy Pearce – Aldrich Killian
  • Rebecca Hall – Maya Hansen

Now, I mention the budget simply to give you a bit of behind the scenes trivia. We are living in a world where vigilantes save the world from “Norse Gods” and aliens, and where a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist can wear a multi purpose tank (basically) in the form of a full body suit. In one way, he’s a rock star, in many other ways he’s just like you and me who just so happens to be a genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.

Steve Rogers: “Big man in a suit of armour. Take that off, what are you?”

Tony Stark: “Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist.”
-Avengers

The biggest themes of the movie is love and self encouragement. The first half of the movie deals a lot with the aftermath of Avengers, where Tony had a “too close for comfort” brush with death trying to save New York. Now, he’s kept himself isolated and preparing for a similar situation by building, roughly, 35 different suits for various scenarios. The later half is a bit more intriguing and very Stark-centric.

This is where I complain and applaud. Mandarin. He was teased since the first movie and then we were told Mandarin would show up in number three. We, the fans of comics, were lied too. For all the hype Ben Kingsley brought through the trailers, and even in the film, his role was such a let down. I understand why it was done to not make him typically Asian (come on, for a period of time, he was green) but, after reading the great run of Matt Fraction, how could one not want to see a closer to the source material version of Mandarin. It could have even been a great way to get the ball rolling on a Dr. Strange movie. With this new direction & director, whom I’ve never seen any of his past work, (to my understanding) there’s a lot to be happy about. Stark is still a smart ass who delivers quick verbal jabs left, right and centre. This Stark is very much more grounded (when compared to Iron Man 2). Which does work to a fault almost, but you get over it a little bit. There is one character who I thought was a bit random, and really only there for the family aspect. Personally, I think that the end ruins the movie. The story itself is complete, but it’s so far removed from the two previous films that its almost as if this movie was an out of continuity story.

The things Iron Man does, even with his new (ugly coloured) suit is really impressive. Even the other ones is all greatness. This is a Tony Stark that should exist in the world of today with all the latest technology advancements. In the climatic battle he’s very loose and limber. The biggest flaw of all was the end result to Pepper Potts. P.s. Fans of ‘Rescue”… That wasn’t rescue, haha

Bottom Line: What does the future hold for Stark? That is a question only time can answer. The post credit scene isn’t necessary to see, for once. Lastly, it goes 1st movie as the best, 3rd and Iron Man 2 as the “worst” one Okay.. I think I said what I needed too.

  • Overall rating of the movie: 3.1 out of 5,
  • Cinematography: 3.9 out of 5,
  • Editing: 4 out of 5,
  • Audio: 4 out of 5,
  • Acting: 4 out of 5,
  • Theatres or wait for the blu-ray? see it in Imax, and get the blu ray, it’s decent in 3D as well

Here’s the synopsis:

Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

If you want you want to know more, then by all means continue reading.

*SPOILERS START HERE*

Various sites have confirmed reports that one of the villains will be in fact a recently used character from the Marvel mainstream comics, ‘Iron Patriot’.

The armor made its first appearance in 2009’s “Dark Avengers” #1. Following the events of the “Secret Invasion” crossover, Norman Osborn was mistakenly heralded as an American hero and tasked with leading a group of government-sanctioned Avengers. Taking the technology from Stark Industries, Osborn designed his suit to represent the then-recently-deceased, Captain America.

Due to Spider-Man being owned by Sony (movie rights), the man behind the mask won’t be William Dafoe or anyone named Norman Osborn, but actor James Badge Dale (The Grey, Shame), who recently joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3.

“Dale will play Eric Savin. In the Marvel comicbooks, he’s a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Army put in charge of Project: Ultra. After stepping on a land mine, cybernetic surgery is performed on him and he’s resurrected as the cyborg Coldblood.” – Variety

Also noted by ‘Variety’, is that this movie will feature more elements from the ‘Extremis’ story line (comic book), which the first movie took ideas from as well. Though to my personal understanding, the only thing that was based off that story was the design of the suit for the movie.

The two differences is the man behind the mask and the colour scheme.
