Bunji Garlin’s Differentology Music Video

The video for one of, if not, the biggest song of the year for Soca music is here. Personally, I suggest watching the video, then reading what Bunji said below the video and watch it again. I did and it makes a bit more sense.

“This is just a music video- it’s not a movie, but it’s not the typical music video where there’s just a lot of dancing. There’s a storyline. This video depicts man coming to life from nothingness to the formation of past, present and what will come in the future. It’s not a hard story from beginning to end- there’s still some freeness to it. I hope you enjoy.” – Bunji Garlin

Fantastic Friday Results

imagesFantastic Friday has come and gone and even though many don’t agree (I amongst them), the judges made their choice. My commentary is at the bottom.

Results are in! For the International Groovy Soca Monarch 2013: 4th: Ravi B 3rd: Blaxx 2nd: Iwer George 1st: Machel Montano

For the International Power Soca Monarch 2013: 1. Machel Montano and Superblue (tie) 3. Benjai 4. Destra

Machel Power Performance (video)

As I sat watching this from the comfort of my house, I appreciated the fact he is used music from the upcoming Man Of Steel trailer. Last year, he used music from “Tron Legacy”, and even wore the costume from the movie. I dont know if he is into comic books, but if I ever get to interview him, I’ll be sure to ask. Simply put, this performance consisted of A LOT of gimmicks, which is something he can do being that he is the reigning champ. The crowd response was good and when he started to “Float” like Superman, (p.s, Superman doesn’t float) is when I knew, he may have just beaten Super Blue/Supa Blue, regardless of what Supa did (however this did came to me after hearing the news of the tie *RT @CoolyoNgeLEW “This is how Machel, could get robbed literally. He goes to jail and pays back 90% of his winnings to TNT”*).

Superblue Power Performance (video)

The King of Fantastic Friday made his return to the grand stage and, as you can see, he destroyed all expectations. One of the commentators said it best, and I’m paraphrasing, something along the lines of “he could have been like MJ and just stood there and the crowd could have gone crazy and performed for him until he was ready to start the show”. I don’t know the theme he had going in to this performance, if any, but being who he is, he didn’t need one. Yes, he is old, but his legacy is very clear as to what he brought to the genre of Soca. His absence has been clearly felt for some time and with this we can only hope he continues whenever possible to bring back the fond memories of the proverbial “Good Old Days” that so many know of. How the prize money is divided up, is beyond me. Personally, I think Super Blue won because his performance was more of culture vs Machel’s gimmicky performance that you would typically see in “North America” which Machel has done a lot of work to bring Soca to a new level in.

Destra Power Performance (video)
Another tweet I made was “You know, for an event as “prestigious” as #Socamonarch you’d think there would be less mistakes…” I have watched countless videos of past Soca Monarch’s and every year it’s the same thing. The Director of the programme is HORRIBLE. For those who are about to/currently saying “Well why don’ t you go do it then if its so easy”, I WOULD LOVE TO. The highlight of Destra’s performance  was her scaffolding wine which is great, BUT THEN THE CAMERA PULLS AWAY TO A LONG SHOT OF THE CROWD?!?! For the viewer at home, or elsewhere watching the video… it’s pretty annoying. Let’s be honest for a second. Destra IS a sex symbol for many in the caribbean/West Indian community. WHY THE HELL WOULD WE WANT TO SEE THE CROWD AT THAT MOMENT? Now aside from that, I think above all she was misplaced (even more so than Blaxx, but he too got robbed) and Benjai was apparently very drunk. His performance bombed, in my opinion. I was lacklustre to say the least. Nice costumes, but just horrible. Destra should have easily come third. Why she didn’t, I do not know.

I didn’t see the entire event. I tuned in from Blaxx’s performance for Groovy onward, and again, his performance was more culture and legacy. He brought his daughter on stage who was beating pan (How more Trini could you get?). Everyone thought he was going to win on my twitter timeline and, to be honest, that would have made the most sense. Machel’s performance was, again, very gimmicky. I’m sure from an audience stand point, I would have been more entertained actually being there than I have been while sitting at home watching these things. Which, in a way, is the fault of the show’s director. What s/he should have done was work with each artist to figure out a camera movement plan so as to deliver the best possible viewing experience for those watching from home. Its the same thing when watching a sporting event. 75% of the time it’s better to watch it at home or at a bar because you can get all the recaps and replays you miss by seeing it live due to phone calls, hot girls or what have you. Lastly, I think for 2014, there needs to be a CLEAR CUT judging scheme, so the artist can bring out more for their performance and the audience can “judge” for themselves. Destra said she wanted to bring more to the stage but the fire marshall denied her, for whatever reason, so her opening was bad during her power performance.

WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR?

Bunji, Fay Ann Drop From Soca Monarch Two Days From Semi’s

Bunji, Fay Ann Pull Out

Soca Monarch shocker

Bunji Garlin and Fay Ann Lyons-Alvarez have both bowed out of the International Groovy and Power Soca Monarch competitions, respectively.

UPDATE:

POSTED VIA THEIR FACEBOOK FANPAGE

As it with any contract that we are positioned to get into be it endorsement, real estate or the likes we sat with management and legal team for proper advice about the Soca Monarch contract simply because it is our right and responsibility as human beings and artistes to do so. To enter into Soca monarch one has to agree and therefore sign the contract and we are not in agreement with some of the contracts clauses and we are in no way asking nor demanding that they make changes to suit us because it would not be fair to the other artistes therefore we choose to respectfully withdraw from the competition. This is not expected to be a noisy situation or a back and forth public battle, the Foundation reserves it’s right to do what it thinks is needed to protect it’s entity just as we reserve the right to agree , disagree and protect ourselves where and when is required.

The couple announced this last night, saying they decided to withdraw because they believe that fundamental clauses in the competitors’ contracts were objectionable and demanded too much of the winners.

bunji-fayann-NL

They were therefore advised by their management and legal representatives that it was best they pull out of the competition before the semi-final round on Sunday at the Arima Velodrome. Bunji had pulled position number 15 and Lyons-Alvarez number 20.

Among the elements in the contract with which Bunji and Lyons-Alvarez took exception to was the rule that winners must give back to the Caribbean Prestige Foundation (CPF) five per cent of the winnings.

Also, the winners must defend the respective titles the following year, or they will have to pay back 90 per cent of the prize money.

Another clause the artistes are objecting to in the contract is that the winners must attend the prize distribution ceremony wherever it may be, here at home or abroad.

Chairman of CPF William Munro, said last night he was saddened and very hurt over Lyons-Alvarez and Bunji pulling out only two days before the semi-finals, and he was hoping they would reconsider.

“There was never any discussion. They could have even sent a letter, and I would have sat down with them to see how we could work things out. Last year, I had two meetings with many of the artistes at my home, and we presented the rules and they were agreed on.”

“Fay Ann topped the Power in the preliminaries and Bunji topped in the Groovy. I am wondering how the public is going to take this news because everybody was so happy when they returned.

“I hope they will reconsider or at least meet with me. I have no malice and still love them. I will bend over backwards for them, but I can’t change the rules to please only two people,” Munro said.

Lyons-Alvarez and Bunji did not compete in the Soca Monarch competition last year and at that time announced they were considering not returning because they wanted to focus on taking their music directly to an international audience.

When Bunji ended up with a major hit with the release of the song “Differentology” in November last year, people began to call for his return to the competition. This was the same with Lyons-Alvarez when she released, among other songs, “D Stage Open”.

After several weeks of saying they will consider returning to the Soca Monarch if that was what the people wanted, the couple’s management registered them to compete, with Bunji in the Groovy and Lyons-Alvarez in the Power Soca Monarch.

Adding to the excitement of their return was the fact that Lyons’ father, five-time Soca Monarch champion SuperBlue, had also made a comeback after an over-decade-long hiatus.

All soca music fans and the public at large were anticipating a grand showdown at the Hasely Crawford National Stadium on Carnival Friday between Lyons-Alvarez, SuperBlue, Iwer George and defending Power Soca champion Machel Montano, as well as the clash between Bunji and Montano in the Groovy category.

Tiff

Now even though the title says Tiff.. Its not about the Toronto international film festival. But rather the Caribbean Tales Toronto Film Showcase, and on this night it was a Trinibago themed night, so the name only seemed fitting (however I don’t believe its affiliated with the Toronto intl film fest).

The main feature, wasn’t for any live actor, but for a black muppet.. By the name of Santana…

Yes that one. so as we go along, I shall be giving you a brief description of the event, the films. And along the way, giving you more santana shorts.. Like this one:

The night started with a CEO Frances-Anne Solomon who runs the event giving the audience a nice joke and telling us about the organization and all that we were to expect. Then it was time for the first movie…

Reality check“: A celebrity has to get ready for some kind of show but when the time comes to bring it, we notice not everything is as it appears.
– This short film was the worst. Granted, its a film that only had 48 hrs to be made. I just felt the story wasn’t clear at all. The actors were decent for the principle of what this was to be. But over all.. It wasn’t as great as it could have been with the way it ends with telling the audience to get checked for cancer. I blame the editor.

Pothound“: A day in the life of a vagrant dog hero.
-this may have been the most family themed movie, and easily second best on the bill. Its a little on the stereotypical side, but once you over look that. Its easy to fall in love with this movie. Can I get a sequel?

Fish“: when two men try to better themselves off another’s work, someone will end up sleeping with the fishes.
-the is the 3rd best. If not tied for any of the other top two. The shot selection, the dialogue the editing was all above what I expected, especially with a film with that title. It has a lot in this movie. And its very clear to under stand.. Even with all the flashbacks. Great piece of work.

Now time to get to the few documentaries on the bill. The first is…”Directions” have you ever asked a Trini for directions?
-this was hilarious if you’re a born Canadian, adopted, foster child, etc with trini parents/relatives then you know already what this. Film is talking about. When you ask a trini for directions. You won’t ever get a clear answer, or the right answer. The challenge was to get to the infamous “Green Corner”… Let’s just say, we didn’t get a clear answer.
Power of the Vagina: just how and why the vagina is so powerful.
-it was a nice attempt but.. To me it failed. I still got a few kicks, and maybe learned something new, but I wasn’t all that entertained by this. Some of the people they interviewed seemed to not know a lot.

Be wise: One woman stand up in the face of adversity to help save an ecosystem, with the aid of bees.
-When this movie started I didn’t know what it was.. The end result makes you think you watched one of those “apart of our heritage” commercials that were frequent in the 90’s (a canadian thing) because you just don’t entirely know if its a true story or just.. A work of fiction either way.. This wasn’t on my list for the night.

Mr. Crab: a son recounts his fear of crabs as his father searches for him.
-as much as wanted to like this… I just couldn’t. I know of the male who played the father from a previous play of his so I had wanted to. But the premise was either missing or it went entirely over my head. But from the audience reaction.. I don’t think anyone got or understood it. Minus one random scene, it was ok.. For a one time watch.

Next was the Kes video.. The speaker said she featured it so people can see that caribbean videos aren’t always just naked women wining (whining) their waist. It was partially effect for that.. She added she likes video’s that tell a story.. I don’t watch video’s because its usually the same thing… Or some kind of rubbish. Not dissing.. I just don’t like music vids. This sadly was no different. ¬__¬

OUR FEATURE FILM… Now I was introduced to this web series thru a friend never did I think it would soon become a movie. No. But I’m glad it did and thanks to my friend “Trini” for letting me know.

***.

This one is about a love hexagon (6 people), Janice, Sookdeo, Santana, Angelia, Pastor stewart, Kizzy. This film, to not give away any spoilers, was just simply amazing. Roger Alexis did an amazing job handling what made the web shorts so great in a 73 min run time. No character is left out, no question is left unanswered that may have been brought up in previous shorts. There may be one flaw, but it doesn’t take away from the over all enjoyment. Careful not to laugh too loud cause you might miss a joke or two. I won’t get into as much detail as my other reviews, just know if you pay to see this movie, it won’t be wasted. I’m really hoping there’s a sequel, and that it can get a lager audience so that all can enjoy it instead of just one night. The fact that it sold out shows there’s a demand.

Next time this comes around, I’ll post about it. Go out, enjoy the art of cinema.. And enjoy the last of these Santana videos, WARNING… It does contain spoilers.

THAT’S IT! Cheers: “To Peace” and May the Force be with you!
