Skyfall – An Essenex Review

Hello one and all,

My boy @MR_STiXX and I got together to talk about Skyfall, the latest Bond flick. He’s the only other person who sees film as such an art form as I do, so give it a look and enjoy (THIS ONE IS SOMETHING YOU CAN WATCH).

AvX #12

Issue starts with Tony explaining how and why the Phoenix Force is here, and affected by Wanda Maximoff. Wanda’s chaos magic is a ying to the Phoenix Force’s yang of control. Then, he explains how exactly Hope will bring forth a win. It cuts to the battle that started in the last issue, and then back to roughly 72 hours prior for a bit to give us a bit of back story. The issue then gets all action oriented by showing Hulk and Thor get punched half way across the globe. And Cap, seemingly arriving to give the Avengers one last push. With Cyclops easily beating them, Nova helps ground him, where some hope comes from the tag team of Hope, and Wanda who eventually beat him. As he falls, the Phoenix Force finds its intended Host, who seems to be in total control and is fixing the destruction made by Cyclops. When she comes back (she moves very fast), she announces to her onlookers that she is the Phoenix, and Wanda informs her that’s not why she was chosen. She tells Hope that she’s the only one willing and able to deny the Phoenix a host vessel and in doing so, she does what she is most famous for doing. No more Phoenix. And just like that, the battle is over. Now most of the X-men’s prominent members are on the run, and Cap.A believes it’s time for a new set of Avengers, something a little more uncanny. Meanwhile, Cyclops has been arrested, and currently in prison. The end. For now.

First and foremost, I want to say: this is the Marvel version of Final Crisis. NOTHING REALLY HAPPENED.
I’m sure in later years, this will mean more since there’s “no more Phoenix” and all. But at the end of House of M, there was a CLEAR CUT OUTCOME. This was just, blah,  and then “oh yea.. Your fallen comrades are missing and need to be found in case you were wondering, arrested Cyclops”. I’m sorry but for as great as this idea felt, and as hyped as it was, and for how great this started,  it failed. This was a series of arcs to get here, and Hope Summers seemed fated to be this WICKED character, and all the writers as a team blew it. The art and panel work was good, but for the most part, I’m ashamed Marvel produced this.

In case you were wondering how it’s like final crisis, the heroes win by having Superman find this “wish maker” machine, that literally creates what ever you wish for. He wished for a happy ending–No more Phoenix, who really hasn’t been a thing of prominence since the Dark Phoenix saga with Jean Grey, so it  just felt lame. Since “Civil War”, these arcs have been pointless, or poorly handled. This again is why I call it similar to Final Crisis. Anyway, I’m done rambling..

“Every Avenger gets their moment”

A flash forward to pivotal moment to in the book where Colossus is beating some one to a pulp.  10 hours previous the Avengers are losing across the board, as Cap.A, Wolverine and others return from a rescue mission, Spidey, training with Hope Summers to prepare her for a fight tells hope that every Avengers gets their Turn, (she’s not an avenger.. He’s just saying) some times you just have to wait and follow the big guns for your turn. In Wakanda, Storm arrives to try to help rebuild what’s happened 8 Days prior, (see *last review**) in doing so she finds out all X-men have been branded terrorist, and that the high priest of the Panther Clan has annulled their marriage… He is the high priest… As she turns away she tells him she would like to help the avengers replenish their ranks by telling them where the PHX.4 are keeping their prisoners. Later, the Avengers begin their “Search & Rescue” mission, where they meet up with Prof X. Who helps them hid in Magik’s hell on earth prison. After finding the captured heroes they realize they can’t teleport of there for all the demonic energy prevents it. So Spidey realizes… Its his turn.. As an avenger, he knows what he must do, and he pulls them away from fighting colossus & Magik, who, fights, to an almost tragic end. But is smart enough to manipulate the two to fighting over the others portion of the Phoenix force. When the other Heroes return with the once detained, some go back, & learn that the two had basically both lost their power, grabbed spidey, and head back to Kun’ Lun… Where Cyclops has found them…. To be continued.

Mr. Kubert’s art in this issue may have out done his previous issue. It was amazing to see his art work just come out the way it did. There was some more “out of panel” stuff. Which was very easy on the eyes, and gives you this ideas that you’re being led. As much as I love Jr.jr’s work, this guy could have drawn the whole epic and I would have been glued. Funny thing, do you guys remember the Original gameboy? Well I think spider-man’s first ever game for a “system” was for that hand held device, and when he draws the web-head, it reminds me of that.. Slightly.. And a touch of the Ultimate spider-man. He does really good work here.

Jason Aaron.. I never pictured him as a guy who would/could write spider-man, but he fairs well with the character. Has a mild feeling of that J. Michael Straczynski spider-man run, but still very much Aaron’s way of doing things. There were many jokes to be had, he may have been the best written character this issue. To this point Spidey didn’t say or “do” much. He is in each issue, just… Not a huge factor. He’s a “street” level hero. Stopping muggings, and such. He just so happens to have crazy villains. The story does seem to be on that cliff of the ending soon. And this may have been the start to it. The Emma Frost part (I didn’t mention it because its bit of a shock that one should see), is such a fav moment in the series.. I don’t know about you.. But I was waiting for that to happen.

Enjoy your week!!

Smallville Season 11 #14

The issue starts with Otis waking Lex Luthor up, who must undoubtedly was spying on Superman save the day.. Over & over & over with out rest. Then Otis gives Lex his schedule for the day which includes a visit from a Wayne Tech Representative, cut to the Daily Planet, where Lois is and her intern exchange words about the where about’s of Clark, and why the basement is so dead. Then trouble is in the air… Literally as a school bus is taken hostage with a bunch of young aged children. One child tries to be a hero and as the child try’s to use heat vision to save his friend.. Superman shows up to show the kid how its done. After stopping the situation, the criminal begins to teleport. Of course he’s caught and after some X-ray vision, learns the tech comes from LexCorp… Too be continued.

After last issue.. This is clearly the filler of “time” to get Batman to metropolis and Miller kind of filled it decently. Though I wonder what he told the artist… But I’ll get to that in a moment. There isn’t great dialogue in this one.. It almost felt too childish.. But yet still enjoyable. I will say the best part was the kid standing up to the criminal. In season 10 there was this whole need to inspire more people to be a little more vigilant with their every lives, so it was nice to see it continue. The BIGGEST issue is when Lois enters the scene.. Its the worst handled part of any book I’ve EVER read… Ever. Like it was so bad & pointless… That entire Daily Planet scene. In the Miller written episodes he has this intern that was literally only in his written epi’s and for what ever reason.. He needed to bring him back… Pointless way of doing it too.

Chris.. Chris.. Did you watch the show.. Did you see the costume designs.. Because I don’t think you did. He screws up the nice looking Luthor Corp. Logo.. To something you’d expect to see in the 90’s. And then screws up the fist appearance of Superman in the issue.. I don’t think I liked anything about the artist in this issue. NEXT ARTIST PLS!

Avx #7

So… No more Avengers right?

see this for issue credits

Cyclops, Namor Magik, Emma Frost, and Colossus have all hit and laid siege upon different Avenger “bases” (headquarters if you will) from the tower, to the mansion, to the Avenger Academy (and anything else I’m missing), following what Cyclops said, “No more Avengers”. Where ever Magik is, is where action starts, and all while everyone is fighting, Tony Stark is back in Wakanda studying the effects of her powers against the Magik to see how to beat the PHX.5. Avengers start to be on the losing side, so trying to make an escape plan & trying to buy his team more time, Hawkeye goes off and gets a piece of Emma Frost. He’s set on fire. The avengers and X-men both leave the fight, X-men taking Hawkeye as prisoner knowing they can heal him. Back at Wakanda, Black Panther “bitch” slaps Stark who is trying to create something that will allow himself to die if his plan fails. Dr. Strange and the rest of the Avengers devise a plan to appear like Wanda Maximoff if ever needed. Which it is, in another battle the Avengers take one of the X-men known as “Transonic”. And with 2 simple words Wanda, Makes Namor “Go Away” back on utopia, Namor and Cyclops exchange words, which leads to Emma Frost informing him that The Avengers are in Wakanda, who are planing on leaving to go to the mystical realm of Kun-Lung, when a great wall of water shrouds Wakanda. “WAR” shouts Namor… To Be continued.

Well, as much as I like Matt Fraction, this issue really didn’t feel right. Yes things are still crazy, but it just didn’t feel he got anyone right besides Tony Stark. It’s also kinda pointless what happens to Hawkeye,  actually a lot of it is pointless. It just feels like after the last issue there should be WAY more fights happening. More “chaos” more Avengers versus X-men. I don’t know Fraction to be boring, but it just felt that way, not even Fear Itself was this bad (However I really enjoyed it.. Even though it was RANDOM as hell). Maybe this issue is plagued by having tie in issues to fill in the gaps. One upside is the convo with Stark and T’challa.

Oliver Copiel. I may have hyped his art work a bit, though still very impressive for what it is, it just misses til the last two pages. It may be the placement/use of the panels/frames but something was off. Thankfully, it’s not dreadful, it just doesn’t have the same flair as it usually does. I remember at Fanexpo one year, he said that they finally have him drawing things he likes to draw, and that was around the “Siege” event (So was Soca Explosion 3 folks), so maybe that’s the issue with his work in this one. To further explain it, picture a movie with a lot of quick edits.

Ps. Matt Fraction explained a little what the whole Namor Emma Frost thing was and he basically said it was a long time coming since his uncanny X-men stint, and it’s why he added Namor to the team. So I’ll go out on a limb and say that is issue holds more meaning if you’re an X-men fan.

Enjoy your day,

Smallville Season 11 #12

I love when a story comes together, or when it creates a twist. But I do have my let downs.

So it’s the next day, but from all the drama in the last issue, one would think has been a week or two, with all that’s happened in the last 11 issues. Superman decides to pay Lex a more cordial, formal, human visit. He tells Lex that even though he’s the cause of Hank’s current condition, he believes he was doing the right thing, in some kind of “Lex Luther” way, and his apologies for the windows. But Lex has something else in mind (This is where you may want to revisit *issue 6**). When the shuttle carrying Hank Henshaw’s team into space, blew up and caused a radiation leak, it covered Superman. Though non lethal, it does act as a tracking device, which has just finished the calibration process. Oh, and it can track him for roughly the next 500 years. Later Supes informs Lois that Clark is on extended leave, and he confesses to his fiancé what Lex has done to him. Back at Smallville General Hospital, where Chloe saw her Earth 2 counter part, Ollie tells her the last words were “tell Superman it’s coming”. The Crisis, back in Metropolis, Tess tries to see if she can make Lex move from her side of the mind, she gets a finger to move. High above the city, Superman is watching and listening, as he hears Lois tell him, she loves him. The end.

Perez he drew a much better Tom Welling Superman than he has up to this point. The best scenes are all the Superman/Lex scenes. Every face made was right for the emotion. I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but I believe an artist gets the script, and the artist chooses the best moments to draw where everything would make sense. From the story to the characters feelings, to small details that lay in the background. With that said, another scene that was well crafted, was the reveal of what Chloe of Earth two said. In the background, it’s all red; In all the major crises, at some point the sky’s turn red (the reason I don’t know.. Just does). Now that may have been intentional, or just a something that was added for flair of causing more drama.

The scenes with Lex were also the best scenes written, but this is where my flaw comes from. We’ve done this story already, well kind of. If you watched Smallville season 8, then you may know where I’m headed with this. If you haven’t, well go and watch it. Not all of it, because it was a very garbage season, but to give you a brief recap. In season 7, Lana Lang left the show, or was written out. Either way she left, then somewhere in the early mid season, she came back in season 8 as her love for Clark was rekindled. Lex devised a plan to separate his ex wife from Clark (who has loved her ever since season 1) for good. Some way or another, Lex made an invisible suit that would absorb & store Kryptonite, which means it would kill Clark if he tried to be with her (at the end of season 7 Lex figures everything out about Clark; Spoiler), so Lana absorbs the Green K, and thus ends Lana’s story. This is KIND OF the exact same thing, minus hurting anyone thanks to the radiation, but separating him from the one woman who actually loves him. The best thing about this, is that I didn’t see it coming.

So, this officially ends the Hank Henshaw story, for now and well, the next issue is interesting. As far as continuing Smallville, it’s been a love-hate thing, but thanks for reading 12 reviews.

Enjoy your week!

“This is your Dream Charles, I have given it to you”

10 days after the events on the moon, the “Phoenix 5” (here on out, known as the PHX.5) have created a more tolerable, livable, and PEACEFUL earth, creating a source of food where it once couldn’t grow. On a newly erected X-men Utopia, Charles Xavier, visits his old student Scott Summers aka Cyclops and they discuss how this “accepting” of mutants will cost nothing since it’s almost like a dictatorship. The PHX.5 give reason to be more terrified of mutants who are just mutants, now more than ever. All across the world the PHX.5 are creating peace. It’s a new era from the world, much less, the X-men. At Avengers Tower, Cap.A is having a debrief with Iron fist, who tells him as a battle was ensuing, Colossus showed up, and convinced Zazz to power a PHX.5 power source. In the next room, Stark, Beast, Logan, and the Black Panther are all discussing the possibilities that the PHX.5 may take in a “worst case scenario”, whereas Beast and Black Panther figure, ‘who says they’ll do anything?’ So far they have only made the world peaceful. Days later at the White House, Stark, Cap.A, Obama, and Black Panther, discuss what the PHX.5 meant by a “Pax Utopia”. Elsewhere, Wanda Maximoff foretells the future, or sees, or even creates a possibly deadly time line. Later, the Avengers devise a plan to break into Utopia and snatch Hope away from the PHX.5. Emma Frost senses them, and her and Scott go to violently greet them. Just as the plan seems to be a bust, Wanda shows up and wants to take the Avengers away. Hope wishes to go but as Scott tries to stop Wanda by grabbing her arm, he feels, for the first time since getting the Phoenix Force, pain. After realizing that most of the problems mutants face, stems from the hero’s (in this case the Avengers) protecting the humans against anything, he says 3 words… “No more Avengers”.. To be continued.

Hickman, who wrote issue 4 in this series, and may have given the best opening so far in this crossover event, wrote this issue as well. I’ll probably go out on a limb and say this is my favourite issue to date. The talk with Xavier and Scott really has a certain weight to it. Not only was Professor Xavier a teacher to Scott, but he really was a father figure to him (Scott grew up in an orphanage before his powers came to be). So when he says “here’s you’re dream, I have given it to you”, it’s not intended to be an insult, but I’m sure it is. In the first Superman movie, there’s a saying “the Father becomes the son, and the son, the Father”, which has this never ending cycle. In those words, there holds a lot of meaning for those two, which later it will hold even greater meaning. Another part I loved about this was the Black Panther, and Beast. They give that non superhero feel, meaning they aren’t all, “let’s just go fight”. They give the reader a more rational realization of the entire thing. Fighting is basically all Cap.A and Logan now. In part, due to his weapons manufacturing, so does Iron Man but, BP(Black Panther) is the Head government official of his nation of Wakanda, and Beast hasn’t ever liked fighting, he just did when it was absolutely necessary. He brings up a great point as well about how these are his friends. Honestly, Hickman just does a good job with each character, and ends the issue great with the “No more Avengers” line.

Oliver Copiel, has done a lot of Marvel cross overs. If I’m not mistaken, he was the lead artist for House of M, Siege, and I’m sure he’s done a few Avengers (New) runs. His work in this book is good, but it’s not the best showing he’s ever had. I don’t know if he had other things going on, but I wonder why it’s not as great as others. Most of the flaws are small though. The Scale of Utopia is MASSIVE in this issue. The reveal of that, and the Utopia battle may be my favourite moments in this book.

As I said, this is my fave book, and this is the start of all hell breaking loose. Enjoy your week.

Smallville S11 #11

This was the conclusion.. To the first set of issues. Almost all plot/story threads are tied off in this issue.

The fight that started in S.T.A.R. Labs is an all out brawl (and dialogue) between Superman and Hank Henshaw. Which ends with Superman saving Hank from himself. Then back at the lab, there’s a mild debrief and Terri Henshaw seems to be okay with everything… (Which is a let down for the issue considering how adamant she was in the last issue to end Superman) Back in Smallville, the Queens are aware of being followed so they agree to part ways and try to out smart their predator. Two “love you’s” and a panel later, we’re at the mysterious helmet wearing visitor and then they fight, as they always do. He learns that they have fought before, on a different earth. Enter Chloe; who shoots her in the arm and then tries to heal her (yes, she has the ability to heal people. Very pointless and to be honest, I could have sworn she got rid of it). Some weird repulsion thing happens and then they separate. Where ever the mysterious travel landed.. The she’s met by the same person who was following the Queens, then a loud thunderous sound occurs and as they rush over to the visitor, pull off her helmet.. It’s CHLOE! She informs them that the other earth.. Earth 2… Is gone.

Alright to kind of clear up that madness, in season ten.. They introduced a new “Earth” which just so happened to be written by Bryan Q Miller. I don’t believe Chloe was in the episode.. But it does not matter. The point that was trying to be made was that it’s gone. In the comics (bare with me here) “Earth 2” is an Earth similar to ours but more peaceful. If you can think of your golden age of comics (think 1930’s to about 1950) then you know what I mean. In Smallville Earth 2 is where Clark isn’t found by the Kent’s, but by the Luthors. Chloe wasn’t in those episodes. If I’m not mistaken, she was dead.

Artistically.. Perez has slightly gotten better each issue… Not by much, but slightly.. This issue is well done with all the action. And the shocking discovery at the end. Though.. At first read, it’s a little hard to figure out who it is.. But through process of elimination, it’s clear.

There’s a thing about comic books I’ve always been at an impasse about. If you watch a movie, for example, the Toby Magurie Spider-man series, the one draw back that was sadly consistent, is that the action scenes never had any of spider-man’s banter.. Because  well, he was off fighting. Any fighting/action movie rarely has banter/any other form of dialogue unless its a war general shouting out commands or something like that. Go ahead think about any movie, it’s rare they have dialogue during the action or if there is they both stop to talk. In comics, they fight and talk.. ALL THE TIME! Never really makes sense to me, but each panel is to represent a moment in time of which either the dialogue or the “action” takes place, which could range from a group of people walking to someone throwing a jeep into a building window. Miller and Perez use their talents well to craft great scenes because when Hank and Superman go at it they show you a level of how strong willed Superman is, and how lost Hank became in such a short period of time. This is easily the best part of the book. Then when they’re back at S.T.A.R. Labs, the remainder of that feud, though not over, seems… Well pointless.. Just becomes… Irrelevant. Mostly in part to how Terri Henshaw reacts, this issue wasn’t Miller’s best showing. In any regard, I do find it funny that he wrote one of the earth two episodes, and he brings it back. I think this may become less like the show.. And more like a Regular DC comic book.
