2012 in review

This is pretty cool and I think , a perfect way to announce that in sometime later this month TSM WILL BE NO LONGER. I’m working on a new name but for now, it’s staying as such until I can think of something (which shouldn’t be hard I come up with names all the time). In the near future this same site will feature TONS of more things. I’ve been slacking on posts due to the movie I’ve been working on so bare with me, but as I’m tirelessly  at work, feel free to see what you have helped me achieve in the past year.

Here’s an excerpt:

4,329 films were submitted to the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. This blog had 17,000 views in 2012. If each view were a film, this blog would power 4 Film Festivals

Click here to see the complete report.

Problem Child Talks!

TSM caught up with Problem Child to discuss his origins and why he didn’t compete in this years VINCY Soca Monarch (among other things). Interviewed by @MrStarkMaDD. Filmed and edited by myself & Essenex Co-founder @MR_STiXX

NOTE: the picture quality was due to using a new camera… the next one will be better. this will be the first of many.

THAT’S IT! Cheers: “To Peace” and May the Force be with you!

AvX #8

“Scott, I’m saying this as clearly as I can… Stop this or I will stop you” -Prof X.

Namor has brought a wet hellish fury upon Wakanda, the Avengers aren’t totally prepared, Cap.A & BP(Black Panther) lead the charge. Iron Man grabs Lei Kung thru a Portal back to Kun Lun. Where Hope & Logan had just arrived.  Namor fights with Cap.A, fitting since Namor was the one to find Cap.A in the ice, years & years ago. Iron Fist tries to help, but is thwarted, BP tries to use Namor’s Turned back against him, Namor seems to be willing to give a finishing blow, (of course there’s that egotistical dialogue to show how strong he is) but BP, and Cap.A were stalling.. For the Arrival of Earth’s Mightiest. Else where, Cyclops becomes aware of Namor’s actions & prepares to head to Wakanda. Even though Namor breaks the ones who seem to be unbreakable, Cap.A Sends in the biggest Gun, Wanda Maximoff to the final blow, she’s successful, but as he falls and the fighting seems to have stopped.. All the hero’s question if its a win. & just as they do the rest of the PHX.5 arrive, the hero’s retreat, & some how, the X-men absorb the Phoenix Force from Namor, thus making them the PHX 4. “How dare you Scott Summers” says Charles Xavier (Prof. X) mentally. He tells Cyclops to stop or he himself will stop him. When the heroes get to Kun Lun, they realize that it took every single one of them, to beat Namor, and that each time one of them falls, the PHX. Force will just go back to one of the remaining members of the PHX.4. To be continued.

Bendis wrote a great issue. Which is normal. I swear he can rarely do wrong in my eyes and even if he does, I know its really to set something else up. I believe Bendis is amazing at handling a great sum of characters, he’s proven that with his landmark run on the two main Avengers titles. (Marvel needs to keep it at 2 Avengers… 3 at max) the characters that do talk, actually have something to lose and also have a history. Mostly Cap.A & BP, though I do wish BP had more lines since it was his country being destroyed. As I’ve said before I don’t know how much influence a writer has on what is actually drawn, in the way it is. But if he had a hand in it, then that makes him even better.

Adam Kubert, has this wicked style that I can appreciate more each time because there’s often MANY GAPS is how often I see it. He has this (as I interpret) style that seems almost like a well done sketch. Like he goes says ok Ill’ draw this roughly and then tada, its perfect. Ok maybe not literally. But.. It seems that way. My fave moments by him is the first page, the above Alternate cover, the first time we see the Avengers Vs Namor the Rulk moment, and the telepathy between Prof.X and Cyclops. They all had this great epic moment to it. I do like the way the mini fight between Wanda and Namor was handled in the panels. Its hard to have a “fight” in a comic book. But may have been the best thing I’ve seen in some time. (Though not this series).

The weight of the conversation between Prof. X and Cyclops is just huge. Remember Scott was an orphan and he has basically always known Prof.X for everything. From teaching him how to control his powers, to helping him deal with the loss of Jean Grey and everything in between. Its also such a menacing scene when you look at it. Look out for #9 PEACE!

Smallville Season 11 #14

The issue starts with Otis waking Lex Luthor up, who must undoubtedly was spying on Superman save the day.. Over & over & over with out rest. Then Otis gives Lex his schedule for the day which includes a visit from a Wayne Tech Representative, cut to the Daily Planet, where Lois is and her intern exchange words about the where about’s of Clark, and why the basement is so dead. Then trouble is in the air… Literally as a school bus is taken hostage with a bunch of young aged children. One child tries to be a hero and as the child try’s to use heat vision to save his friend.. Superman shows up to show the kid how its done. After stopping the situation, the criminal begins to teleport. Of course he’s caught and after some X-ray vision, learns the tech comes from LexCorp… Too be continued.

After last issue.. This is clearly the filler of “time” to get Batman to metropolis and Miller kind of filled it decently. Though I wonder what he told the artist… But I’ll get to that in a moment. There isn’t great dialogue in this one.. It almost felt too childish.. But yet still enjoyable. I will say the best part was the kid standing up to the criminal. In season 10 there was this whole need to inspire more people to be a little more vigilant with their every lives, so it was nice to see it continue. The BIGGEST issue is when Lois enters the scene.. Its the worst handled part of any book I’ve EVER read… Ever. Like it was so bad & pointless… That entire Daily Planet scene. In the Miller written episodes he has this intern that was literally only in his written epi’s and for what ever reason.. He needed to bring him back… Pointless way of doing it too.

Chris.. Chris.. Did you watch the show.. Did you see the costume designs.. Because I don’t think you did. He screws up the nice looking Luthor Corp. Logo.. To something you’d expect to see in the 90’s. And then screws up the fist appearance of Superman in the issue.. I don’t think I liked anything about the artist in this issue. NEXT ARTIST PLS!

Smaville Season 11 #13

Finally..

It’s been some time since we last saw the boy scout, and when the story starts, we find ourselves at the famed “Fortress of solitude”. Here we find a shadowed Naked Lois in Clark’s bed. How you may ask, well somehow the Fortress can “block” it (which makes sense since when ever a satellite tries to find the Fortress, it can’t be seen on any form of tracking), but how he got there is a bit more of a mystery..or utter confusion. Basically, Oliver Queen’s satellite passed through the lane of vision to allow Superman to use the caves (see season 2 of the show) to beam himself there. This is the first time Clark also explains a bit of his flight ability.  Cut to Gotham where Nightwing is stopping a crime, but when one criminal decides it’s time to high-tail it out of there in a car, in comes Batman to save the day. As he interrogates him, he confesses a name, Joe Chill; who also happens to be connected in Metropolis. Guess where Batman is headed? To be continued.

THANK THE STARS ABOVE MY PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED!!!! With the new arc comes a new artist, Chris Cross, who shows some promise. It’s a bit of a rocky start, but its may just be a relief to not see Perez any more. The art work at the start of this book is great. When it gets to Gotham, I fairly enjoyed seeing how they blended all the versions of Gotham from the recent movies to the ones in the animated and video game versions as well. Oddly, it felt like the “Lady Vengeance” episode in season 5 after Johnathan Kent’s death, w ith how she was introduced, and all that. The best part of this issue is when you first see the full body of Batman, and the trademark pose of him just standing there looking with thunder and lightning cracking the night sky(made famous by the “Batman: the Animated Series” that ran in the 90’s & bled into a justice league series… Fyi). The character design of Nightwing is a bit troubling. All signs point to a girl, which to me is just sad. I miss the black and blue outfit of Dick Grayson. Hopefully, however long his run is, it’s better than Mr. Perez.

Miller introduces Batman in a very crafty way, and has the Lois-Clark love thing down pretty well, though his explanation for Clark seems flawed (it does make sense however). The way he introduces batman is pretty clever, but expected. After I watched the Avengers, I went to see all of what I could find from Joss Weadon about that film and one thing stuck out to me “characters need to feel like they actually have a life outside of the 1+ you see them for”, and he certainly covered that. I say that because, when we are introduced to Batman, you instantly always go to the best moment of Batman according to you, the reader (Go ahead.. Bet you just did it). His Nightwing is a bit tacky. Nightwing is a female in Smallville, and thanks to that, Bruce Wayne seems more like Tony Stark now. But either way, I’ll give it a piece of my time, so let’s hope the next issue is better

Avx #7

So… No more Avengers right?

see this for issue credits

Cyclops, Namor Magik, Emma Frost, and Colossus have all hit and laid siege upon different Avenger “bases” (headquarters if you will) from the tower, to the mansion, to the Avenger Academy (and anything else I’m missing), following what Cyclops said, “No more Avengers”. Where ever Magik is, is where action starts, and all while everyone is fighting, Tony Stark is back in Wakanda studying the effects of her powers against the Magik to see how to beat the PHX.5. Avengers start to be on the losing side, so trying to make an escape plan & trying to buy his team more time, Hawkeye goes off and gets a piece of Emma Frost. He’s set on fire. The avengers and X-men both leave the fight, X-men taking Hawkeye as prisoner knowing they can heal him. Back at Wakanda, Black Panther “bitch” slaps Stark who is trying to create something that will allow himself to die if his plan fails. Dr. Strange and the rest of the Avengers devise a plan to appear like Wanda Maximoff if ever needed. Which it is, in another battle the Avengers take one of the X-men known as “Transonic”. And with 2 simple words Wanda, Makes Namor “Go Away” back on utopia, Namor and Cyclops exchange words, which leads to Emma Frost informing him that The Avengers are in Wakanda, who are planing on leaving to go to the mystical realm of Kun-Lung, when a great wall of water shrouds Wakanda. “WAR” shouts Namor… To Be continued.

Well, as much as I like Matt Fraction, this issue really didn’t feel right. Yes things are still crazy, but it just didn’t feel he got anyone right besides Tony Stark. It’s also kinda pointless what happens to Hawkeye,  actually a lot of it is pointless. It just feels like after the last issue there should be WAY more fights happening. More “chaos” more Avengers versus X-men. I don’t know Fraction to be boring, but it just felt that way, not even Fear Itself was this bad (However I really enjoyed it.. Even though it was RANDOM as hell). Maybe this issue is plagued by having tie in issues to fill in the gaps. One upside is the convo with Stark and T’challa.

Oliver Copiel. I may have hyped his art work a bit, though still very impressive for what it is, it just misses til the last two pages. It may be the placement/use of the panels/frames but something was off. Thankfully, it’s not dreadful, it just doesn’t have the same flair as it usually does. I remember at Fanexpo one year, he said that they finally have him drawing things he likes to draw, and that was around the “Siege” event (So was Soca Explosion 3 folks), so maybe that’s the issue with his work in this one. To further explain it, picture a movie with a lot of quick edits.

Ps. Matt Fraction explained a little what the whole Namor Emma Frost thing was and he basically said it was a long time coming since his uncanny X-men stint, and it’s why he added Namor to the team. So I’ll go out on a limb and say that is issue holds more meaning if you’re an X-men fan.

Enjoy your day,

Smallville Season 11 #12

I love when a story comes together, or when it creates a twist. But I do have my let downs.

So it’s the next day, but from all the drama in the last issue, one would think has been a week or two, with all that’s happened in the last 11 issues. Superman decides to pay Lex a more cordial, formal, human visit. He tells Lex that even though he’s the cause of Hank’s current condition, he believes he was doing the right thing, in some kind of “Lex Luther” way, and his apologies for the windows. But Lex has something else in mind (This is where you may want to revisit *issue 6**). When the shuttle carrying Hank Henshaw’s team into space, blew up and caused a radiation leak, it covered Superman. Though non lethal, it does act as a tracking device, which has just finished the calibration process. Oh, and it can track him for roughly the next 500 years. Later Supes informs Lois that Clark is on extended leave, and he confesses to his fiancé what Lex has done to him. Back at Smallville General Hospital, where Chloe saw her Earth 2 counter part, Ollie tells her the last words were “tell Superman it’s coming”. The Crisis, back in Metropolis, Tess tries to see if she can make Lex move from her side of the mind, she gets a finger to move. High above the city, Superman is watching and listening, as he hears Lois tell him, she loves him. The end.

Perez he drew a much better Tom Welling Superman than he has up to this point. The best scenes are all the Superman/Lex scenes. Every face made was right for the emotion. I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but I believe an artist gets the script, and the artist chooses the best moments to draw where everything would make sense. From the story to the characters feelings, to small details that lay in the background. With that said, another scene that was well crafted, was the reveal of what Chloe of Earth two said. In the background, it’s all red; In all the major crises, at some point the sky’s turn red (the reason I don’t know.. Just does). Now that may have been intentional, or just a something that was added for flair of causing more drama.

The scenes with Lex were also the best scenes written, but this is where my flaw comes from. We’ve done this story already, well kind of. If you watched Smallville season 8, then you may know where I’m headed with this. If you haven’t, well go and watch it. Not all of it, because it was a very garbage season, but to give you a brief recap. In season 7, Lana Lang left the show, or was written out. Either way she left, then somewhere in the early mid season, she came back in season 8 as her love for Clark was rekindled. Lex devised a plan to separate his ex wife from Clark (who has loved her ever since season 1) for good. Some way or another, Lex made an invisible suit that would absorb & store Kryptonite, which means it would kill Clark if he tried to be with her (at the end of season 7 Lex figures everything out about Clark; Spoiler), so Lana absorbs the Green K, and thus ends Lana’s story. This is KIND OF the exact same thing, minus hurting anyone thanks to the radiation, but separating him from the one woman who actually loves him. The best thing about this, is that I didn’t see it coming.

So, this officially ends the Hank Henshaw story, for now and well, the next issue is interesting. As far as continuing Smallville, it’s been a love-hate thing, but thanks for reading 12 reviews.

Enjoy your week!

Avx #3

The third book in this series is a bit quieter.

The fighting is over for the most part and where Hope left Wolverine & Spider-Man, is where this book picks up. Logan awakes after being cooked alive, and Spider-Man fills him in on what he’s missed out on. Logan being who he is, realizes this doesn’t smell right, so when he finds out Cyclops has surrendered, he races over to tell the Avengers it’s a trap, no one believes him and thanks to that, Cyclops disappears with the aid of Colossus’ sister Illanya. When they reach the new location, a plan of finding Hope is put in place. Next is a scene of Hope who builds a location disrupter that throws all tracking systems off the right path. Back at Avengers tower, Logan and Cap.A speak to Rachel Summers, who joined with Logan and his school, who then gives false information to Logan, but seems to have already helped Scott Summers (yes they’re related.. In some multiverse way) with the locations in hand, Cap.A sets up teams to see which lead is legit. Wolverine is with Cap.A, Sharon Carter, and Giant Man who are off to the Savage Land (I recommend you click the link, so as to understand what happens next a little bit). Cap.A pulls Logan aside and tells him what he wants, and his actions on utopia aren’t acceptable, Logan proves stubborn, Cap.A gets irritated, and kicks him from the Quinjet into the arctic snow! … To be continued.

I just wanna say, Ed Brubaker has been working on Captain America for at least 2 years. So that little scuffle with Captain A. is bias… And unfair so America didn’t beat Canada FYI! But other than that, it’s a solid written issue. Not the best out of the series, but it definitely moves the story along. Which is what all story based things need. There is also a scene with Iron Man and Cap.A I didn’t mention above but its my favourite part of this book EASILY!!. I don’t know Brubaker much. I don’t but after reading this I may look at some of his Cap.A run.

Continuity is key to me in a comic book. I’m sure its what made Watchmen so successful. There’s one scene, the start, that has you confused since we left Logan with clothes on, then in this issue you he’s “butt naked” (I’m assuming). But past that it is pretty consistent with having all the battle damage that each hero was shown having. His art this time around is still as superb as it’s ever been. The scene with Magneto moving the metal containers out of the way is one of my favourite scenes. Though that may be a photoshop thing versus his actual talent. Either way.. Its fantastic.

As I said with the Cap.A beating Logan. It’s the only problem I have with this issue. That aside, this is shaping up to be a grand story either way. Wait till next issue where it goes into overdrive.

AvX #2

With cyclops throwing the  proverbial first punch… It’s official.. Avengers vs X-men has begun.

The last issue ends with S.H.I.E.L.D’s helicarrier flying just above Utopia where the fight really gets started in minutes, Hulk(Red) vs Colossus, Iron Man vs Emma Frost, Iron Man vs Magneto, Cyclops vs Captain America, Namor vs The Thing & Luke Cage, Dr Strange vs Magik. It all felt like the battle issue that was supposed to happen, given the title of the book. As all the fighting is taking place, Emma escorts Hope away, and realizing, she is the sole reason this is happening, she tells Emma that she needs to be out there. Emma instructs Hopes friends to not allow her to leave. No matter what. Hope, being trained by Cable, soon finds a way out. But not before Wolverine, who managed to slip away, tried to kill her. Some how Hope manages to tap into the Phoenix energy that is within her, and burns Wolverine inside and out. Hope has escaped. In space, Thor, Valkyrie, Beast, Ms Marvel, The Protector, War Machine, the Vision & Captain Britain look at raw power, the power of life and death itself, right in the face… To be continued.

Jason Aaron isn’t a writer I follow extensively. When I was trying to catch up on X-men, he did the Wolverine story where he is looking for Mystique for back stabbing the X-men (Though why you’d ever trust a shape shifter who abandoned both her kids, is beyond me), but this issue, even though its mostly a fighting issue, it has this odd grace to it. The small narration when two hero’s clash added that extra spice to make this book everything nice (Ye.. I just said that).
John romita is still as awesome as he has ever been in this issue. There’s something about his style that makes his stuff just look flawless, Maybe its the inker’s he gets to work with, but either way, the combo is just great. There are moments that are still epic and with the way the panels are placed they make everything better. My favourite moment is when Magneto challenges Iron Man and the build up to that is just a delight (Aaron & Romita may work very well together).

This book plays right into the title. This is definitely the most action packed issue until.. Well I won’t ruin which issue. But it is. (Keep reading the reviews to see.) Sadly the only thing this book/issue lacks is any clear cut winner between any two individual sides like Hulk (the red one.. here on out shall be”Rulk”) vs Colossus.. Like I’d want to see that fight. Hopefully Marvel is smart and make this a direct to dvd series that give us crazy fights and can help elaborate the story and the battles further.
