Olympus Has Fallen: Movie Review.

The start of the blockbuster movies is early this year. With the release of Olympus Has Fallen, it’s the worst day in American fictional history.

Director: Antoine Fuqua, Writers: Creighton RothenbergerKatrin Benedikt Run Time: 120 mins

I saw this trailer and the title a few weeks back and loved the idea. Olympus being the golden jewel of Roman/Greek mythology, the place where gods would sit and control mortals fates and destinies–which happens to be sort of what any and all governments are. But, this isn’t in any way a brain teasing movie. This is Gerald Butler kicking ass, short of kicking a man down and instead saying this is the White House! /this is America!

I thought the idea of this was crazy, and from the trailer above, the action would be too. And it is. This is bringing back solo, gun-toting heroes to the forefront once again, like back in the 80’s-90’s; A one man army goes and saves the day, the way action movies should be. But it’s not only great with action, everything seemed very plausible. The stunts weren’t crazy and over the top, nor were they under performed. In all honesty, if you’re a gamer and have played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this is the movie you wanna see. It really has a drastic effect from the minute the crisis starts until the end credits.

Not only is it heavy in action, but the two-hour long (on the dot) story is well written too. Some time passes in the movie, and the way they catch you up is beyond natural. Seamless even. Oh, and there are one liners. What’s an action movie without one liners? Morgan Freeman has a very bad ass moment, one you wouldn’t expect. But again, it’s very logical and evident of the times. The cast was very believable in each role.

The  flaws I noticed, was a minor use of CGI. The place setting for this movie is in Washington D.C., and I can only imagine the hardships faced to film a story like this there. That being said, for one scene there’s a CGI modelled scene and it’s honestly lazily done. Also, given the clear holidays of in the movie, I wonder if releasing it now was the best choice.

Bottom line: This is one of the movies that wrap you in and make you wanna clap in the climatic battle. Is it a movie that leaves you guessing? Of course not. You’re not gonna have the white house under siege and have the bad guy win. But for the story, the potential to relate to characters, and the action/entertainment value, this movie is well done. Probably the best of its class (class being terrorism in America type action movie).

Rating:

  • Overall rating of the movie: 4.3 out of 5,
  • Cinematography: 3 out of 5,
  • Editing: 3.7 out of 5,
  • Audio: 5 out of 5,
  • Acting: 4.3 out of 5,
  • Theatres or wait for the blu-ray?  Worthy of every penny for entertainment value. would suggest adding to any action movie lover’s dvd/blu-ray collection.
I just found this trailer looks like well be seeing more horrific White House stories this year.

THAT’S IT! Cheers: “To Peace” and May the Force be with you!

ASSASSIN’S CREED vs THE WALKING DEAD vs FAR CRY vs MAX PAYNE

That title really explains the video you’re about to see. It’s Conner Kenway from Assassin’s Creed 3, Max Payne from the “Max Payne” series (3rd Instalment version), Cortana, from Halo Series for Xbox & Xbox 360, Lee Everett from the Walking Dead, and Vaas from Far Cry 3. It’s an all out Battle royal with these characters. Brought to you by “Bat in the Sun”

Who do you think wins?

So… No more Avengers right?

see this for issue credits

Cyclops, Namor Magik, Emma Frost, and Colossus have all hit and laid siege upon different Avenger “bases” (headquarters if you will) from the tower, to the mansion, to the Avenger Academy (and anything else I’m missing), following what Cyclops said, “No more Avengers”. Where ever Magik is, is where action starts, and all while everyone is fighting, Tony Stark is back in Wakanda studying the effects of her powers against the Magik to see how to beat the PHX.5. Avengers start to be on the losing side, so trying to make an escape plan & trying to buy his team more time, Hawkeye goes off and gets a piece of Emma Frost. He’s set on fire. The avengers and X-men both leave the fight, X-men taking Hawkeye as prisoner knowing they can heal him. Back at Wakanda, Black Panther “bitch” slaps Stark who is trying to create something that will allow himself to die if his plan fails. Dr. Strange and the rest of the Avengers devise a plan to appear like Wanda Maximoff if ever needed. Which it is, in another battle the Avengers take one of the X-men known as “Transonic”. And with 2 simple words Wanda, Makes Namor “Go Away” back on utopia, Namor and Cyclops exchange words, which leads to Emma Frost informing him that The Avengers are in Wakanda, who are planing on leaving to go to the mystical realm of Kun-Lung, when a great wall of water shrouds Wakanda. “WAR” shouts Namor… To Be continued.

Well, as much as I like Matt Fraction, this issue really didn’t feel right. Yes things are still crazy, but it just didn’t feel he got anyone right besides Tony Stark. It’s also kinda pointless what happens to Hawkeye,  actually a lot of it is pointless. It just feels like after the last issue there should be WAY more fights happening. More “chaos” more Avengers versus X-men. I don’t know Fraction to be boring, but it just felt that way, not even Fear Itself was this bad (However I really enjoyed it.. Even though it was RANDOM as hell). Maybe this issue is plagued by having tie in issues to fill in the gaps. One upside is the convo with Stark and T’challa.

Oliver Copiel. I may have hyped his art work a bit, though still very impressive for what it is, it just misses til the last two pages. It may be the placement/use of the panels/frames but something was off. Thankfully, it’s not dreadful, it just doesn’t have the same flair as it usually does. I remember at Fanexpo one year, he said that they finally have him drawing things he likes to draw, and that was around the “Siege” event (So was Soca Explosion 3 folks), so maybe that’s the issue with his work in this one. To further explain it, picture a movie with a lot of quick edits.

Ps. Matt Fraction explained a little what the whole Namor Emma Frost thing was and he basically said it was a long time coming since his uncanny X-men stint, and it’s why he added Namor to the team. So I’ll go out on a limb and say that is issue holds more meaning if you’re an X-men fan.

Enjoy your day,
